It's a good, solid chair of reputable character. The Russian rhyme goes something like \"March's a-knocking? don't take off warm stockings\", i.e, curb your enthusiasm, it's still cold. Appropriately, willow flowers come with fur coats of their own. Dress for the weather!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo Russians have a sort of a tender affection for the willow flowers. In fact, in the Russian Orthodox tradition, Palm Sunday is Willow Sunday, owing to palm branches being a little hard to procure at that time of year (and generally). There's more detail on the kettle now including the bit where the paint has chipped very artistically 🧐. I needed to put something in the bottom left of the painting to balance out the composition, and I had a few boiled eggs I brought for lunch so... we have some very artistic eggs here. The eggs are thematically appropriate because, as I wrote, budding willow branches in Russia traditionally substitute for palm branches for Palm Sunday, and Easter is coming. Of course, if I were a practicing Orthodox Christian, I wouldn't have brought eggs for lunch because it's still Lent and eggs are very much verboten. But let's say the willow branches foreshadow the trials and tribulations of Jesus after His entry into Jerusalem and the eggs are a promise of rebirth and resurrection. The promise of eggs, too, by the way! I imagine the end of Lent for the faithful is a cheerful event not only spiritually but also gastronomically. You can see it, for example, in the practice of kintsugi. The potter takes a bowl that shattered into pieces and glues it back together. Then, instead of trying to hide the seams or patch them over, she conspicuously fills them with golden laquer, accentuating the fact that the bowl broke, is breakable, and will eventually break again. In the Western art tradition, there's a similar theme of memento mori (\"remember that you shall die\") where a hint of rot, withering and foreboding is incorporated into what is otherwise a picture of beauty and youth. I feel however that, unlike wabi-sabi, it is often less about acceptance and contemplation and more about reminding the viewer that his death and therefore the day of reckoning is inevitably coming and therefore the viewer should consider whether he is living virtuously. You can see it in the Dutch still lifes where hiding in a luxurious display of flowers and fruits there is an apple with a worm that will soon get to its core, or in Caravaggio's painting of a half-smiling young man portrayed with a wreath on his head and a bunch of grapes in his hand, The young man is half-turned to the viewer, as if interrupted in a moment of a joyous revelry. But his skin has unnatural pallor and a few of the grapes in his hand have gone visibly bad. This Bacchus is definitely not well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are the things I was musing about while painting this simple still life of withered tulips. Their beauty is not of a conventional type. In fact, with their twisted petals and warped stems, you might even have trouble recognizing them as tulips.
