Before you are the roofs of Saint Petersburg. The paint is applied in a pastose manner and the painting has a lot of texture. The surface of the roof occupying the bottom half of the painting has the starring role: far from a boring old flat roof, it's a festival of richly layered pinks, blues and purples.
I have a bit of a thing for Saint Petersburg, a city equal parts grand and charming. This painting is a tribute to its more private side: after all, you can't obtain a view like that without climbing on a roof yourself.
